What Is HbA1c?

HbA1c, or hemoglobin A1c, is the percentage of your red blood cells whose hemoglobin has become coated with sugar, and because red blood cells live about three months, it reflects your average blood glucose over the previous 8 to 12 weeks rather than a single moment.

A one-off glucose reading can be thrown off by a bad night, a stressful morning, or what you ate yesterday. HbA1c smooths all of that out. The higher your average blood sugar has been, the more glucose sticks to hemoglobin, so the percentage rises. That makes it the gold-standard test for diagnosing and monitoring diabetes, and one of the most useful single numbers in all of preventive health because it is hard to game and slow to move.

What Causes HbA1c to Change

The most common drivers behind a change in HbA1c are:

  • Sustained elevated blood glucose over the prior 2–3 months
  • Insulin resistance developing gradually over years
  • Anemia and conditions that shorten red-blood-cell lifespan can falsely lower it
  • Certain hemoglobin variants can distort the reading on some assays
  • Kidney disease and some vitamin deficiencies can affect accuracy
  • Recent significant blood loss or transfusion

How Hunuu Tracks HbA1c

// HUNUU PREDICTIVE INTELLIGENCE

HbA1c is tagged a high-HIP-weight marker in Hunuu because it moves the metabolic picture even with a single reading — you do not need three values to make it count. Enter it under the BODY pillar's Add Lab Result form (marker, value, collection date) and it surfaces as a biomarker tile alongside your continuous glucose and Garmin data, giving the HIP score both the long-term average and the daily trend.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a normal HbA1c level?

A normal HbA1c is below 5.7%. From 5.7% to 6.4% indicates prediabetes, and 6.5% or higher on two tests indicates diabetes. Many people with diabetes aim for a treatment target below 7.0%, individualized by their clinician.

What average blood sugar does an HbA1c of 6.0 mean?

An HbA1c of 6.0% corresponds to an estimated average glucose of roughly 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L). Each 1% rise in HbA1c reflects about a 28–29 mg/dL rise in average glucose.

How often should HbA1c be checked?

For people without diabetes, roughly every 1–3 years as part of routine screening. For those managing diabetes, typically every 3–6 months, since the test reflects the prior 2–3 months.

Can HbA1c be falsely high or low?

Yes. Anemia, recent blood loss, pregnancy, kidney disease, and certain hemoglobin variants can distort HbA1c. If your HbA1c and daily glucose readings disagree sharply, mention these factors to your clinician.
